This project in Cobham involved the careful dismantling and full removal of a mature oak tree situated on a residential driveway. The tree had grown to a considerable size, with a large proportion of its canopy extending directly over the customer’s property. As with any tree situated close to buildings, safety and precision were essential throughout the entire process to ensure no damage was caused to the house, driveway surface or surrounding garden features.
The first stage of the work involved a full assessment of the tree, including its structure, growth pattern and proximity to the property. Mature oaks are known for their strength and spreading canopies, and in this case, the branches stretched significantly over the roofline. Due to the confined working space and the risks associated with removing such large limbs, our team used advanced rigging techniques to dismantle the tree section by section. This controlled approach allows each branch to be carefully lowered to the ground, avoiding any sudden movement or impact that could cause damage.
Using climbing ropes, friction devices and lowering pulleys, our climber worked methodically from the top down, reducing the crown in manageable pieces. Every branch was securely rigged and lowered with ground crew guiding each section safely onto designated drop zones. This level of precision is essential when working in built-up areas such as Cobham, where gardens are often mature and properties sit close to established trees. By using specialist equipment and trained arborists, the entire dismantling process remained smooth, safe and efficient.
Once the upper canopy had been removed, attention turned to the trunk. The main stem was taken down in controlled sections using similar rigging techniques to ensure stability and predictability. Each piece was transported away from the driveway and processed for removal. As part of our service, all waste – including smaller branches, woodchip and larger rounds of core wood – was taken off site for responsible recycling or repurposing.
To complete the project, the remaining stump was fully removed using a stump grinder. This allows the area to be left clean, level and ready for re-turfing, re-planting or resurfacing, depending on the customer’s plans. Removing the stump also prevents regrowth and reduces the risk of fungal issues developing in the future.
The result was a completely cleared driveway, improved access for the homeowner and peace of mind knowing the overhanging branches no longer posed a risk to the property. This project is a great example of the professional tree removal work we carry out across Cobham and the wider Surrey area, combining technical skill, safety-led methods and a tidy finish every time.
